Oct 18, 2019· Australia Manganese consists of Groote Eylandt Mining Company (GEMCO), a manganese mining operation located in the Northern Territory, and Tasmanian Electro Metallurgical Company (TEMCO), a manganese alloy plant located in Tasmania. South32 Limited owns 60 per cent of GEMCO and Anglo American Plc holds the remaining. 40 per cent.
The Groote Eylandt manganese mine has been in operation since 1965, and has produced more than 115 million tonnes of manganese ore and concentrate to June 2018. The mine is operated by the Groote Eylandt Mining Company Pty Ltd (GEMCO), which is majority owned by South 32 Ltd.

Mar 21, 2018· The roads on Groote Eylandt that don’t lead to the mine (Groote Eylandt produces a quarter of the world’s manganese) are all fiercely corrugated red dirt trails. But they lead to places Nick’s only just discovering, often just days before I do (and where else on Earth does that happen?)
Mar 12, 2019· About GEMCO (Groote Eylandt) Mine. Manganese mine on the island of Groote Eylandt, in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Northern Territory. Quick Facts: 60% owned by South32. 40% owned by Anglo America. largest and lowest-cost manganese ore producer in the world. GEMCO comprises of:
GEMCO is one of the largest and lowest-cost manganese ore producers in the world. Its attributes include high-grade ore, open-cut mining operations, its own port facilities located at Milner Bay only 16km from mining operations, and its close proximity to Asian export markets.
The Groote Eylandt Archipelago is a pristine set of remote islands in the Gulf of Carpentaria, home to both the Anindilyakwa people and one of the biggest Manganese mines in the world. A number of traditional family groups reside in several permanent communities spread across the Archipelago and into mainland Numbulwar.
The Groote Eylandt manganese deposit is located on the island of Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Northern Territory, Australia, some 50 km from the coast of Arnhem Land and 650 km ESE of Darwin. Groote Eylandt lies on the eastern margin of the Proterozoic McArthur Basin.
Mining. Groote Eylandt is part of the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve. GEMCO, a South32 / Anglo American plc joint venture, operates a large manganese mine near the community of Angurugu. In operation since the early 1960s, the mine produces more than 3.8 million tonnes annually about a quarter of the world's total.
The water supply for the mining town of Alyangula on Groote Eylandt comes from a pump station 18 kilometres away on a creek adjacent to the Angurugu indigenous community. Various facilities associated with BHP Billington's GEMCO manganese operations and the communities draw water along the way and the remainder terminates in large storage tanks above the township.

Feb 25, 2019· These days, tourism is still in its infancy and it’s multi-billion-dollar business GEMCO (Groote Eylandt Mining Company) — in operation since the 1960s — that keeps the island humming, producing more than 3.8 million tonnes of manganese ore
I was on Groote Eylandt for 5 weeks helping Ami with data collection for her PhD project. As well as stunning landscapes and amazing native animals, Groote Eylandt is also home to a large manganese mine. All animals need some amount of manganese to function, but like any heavy metal it can be toxic in high concentrations.
These were found to be nearly twice the number of plants identified by Langkamp, Ashton and Balling (1981) as growing on a manganese ore outcrop on Groote Eylandt. Comparisons between the tailings and ore outcrop, suggest that physical impedence to plant establishment and growth on the ore outcrop, rather than the manganese levels is the reason
The manganese ore deposits at Groote Eylandt are quite variable both in regard to grade and physical cond- ition. In order to treat a wider range of these ores and to increase production a new primary-crusher and’ concentrator complex costing $8 million has been installed and commissioned to
LIFE ON GROOTE EYLANDT NORTHERN TERRITORY Ten years ago I had the opportunity to live and work on Groote Eylandt, where there is a manganese mine which is operated by BHP. Groote is located in the Gulf of Carpentaria, in the Northern Territory. It is a tropical area, prone to cyclones during the 'wet' and pleasant temperatures for the rest of
Project Description. The mining operation at BHP’s Groote Eylandt Mining Company (GEMCO) on an island in the Gulf of Carpentaria off the coast of the Northern Territory in Australia, was commissioned in 1965 and extracts high grade manganese ore using open-cut, strip mining methods.
The Groote Eylandt manganese ore deposits contain mainly pyrolusite and cryptomelane with lesser amounts of the manganese minerals lithiophorite, todorokite, psilomelane, and nsutite. The major non-manganese minerals which occur are quartz, kaolinite, and goethite. Determination of the mineralogy relies mainly on x-ray diffraction analysis.
